Holguin, Cuba, Jun 29 (ACN) "Universidad 1018", a preamble of the international workshop to be held next year in Havana, kicked off on Thursday in Holguin with a conference on the role of higher education in sustainable development.
Reynaldo Velazquez, Dean of the academic institution, referred to the objective established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in its agenda to 2030 which includes the eradication of hunger, reduction of poverty, confronting climate change and the need to increase food production.
He explained that the universities have the social responsibility in forming committed and responsible professionals, capable of uniting its potential with the demands in the territory.
To confront this challenge, he added that it is vital for the implementation of new teaching strategies like post graduate, rationality and conscious of the researchers in the construction of a better world.
He stressed the need to consolidate major ties between University-Company aimed at favoring the demands of the territory through the prior diagnosis of opportunities that require major efficiency from the academic exercise.
Roberto Sierra, Director of Science and Technology told ACN the importance of the event for the exchange and socialization of dedicated and new researchers who use their knowledge in looking for new strategies for a better work by the island's higher education.
He pointed out that the event, which ends on Friday will present some 240 works by professors and researchers from the Steel Institute in Moa, a branch of the Higher Art Institute and the University of Holguin and the School of Medicine.
