Santiago de Cuba will host meeting on cultural landscapes

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 23 (ACN) The Second Meeting of experts on cultural landscapes: Strategies of Identification and Safeguard will be held in this city from April 11 to 14, in the context of the 20th anniversary of the Conservator's Office of Santiago de Cuba.

It will be a propitious moment to discuss how much progress has been made in the proper management and protection, especially in this eastern city, says the website of the aforementioned institution, which on April 28 th will celebrate its anniversary.

Also sponsored by the Network of Historians and Conservator's Offices of Cuban Heritage Cities, the event will deal with topics such as management plans, socio-cultural function, restoration and conservation and tourist interest, among others.

The program includes master lectures, specialized tours and the inauguration at the Arte Soy Gallery of the exhibition Paisajes Culturales de Santiago de Cuba.

This eastern territory treasures several sites valued as such and with national and international recognition.

Such are the cases of the Fortified Landscape (Castillo del Morro Site and defense system of Santiago de Cuba Bay), as well as the Coffee Archaeological of the first plantations to the southeast of Cuba, both World Heritage.

In addition, El Cobre and the sites named from the path of the image of the Virgen de la Caridad, declared National Monument in March 2012.

The town of that name houses the sanctuary, a place of pilgrimage for Cubans and foreigners, and is a testimony of the Cuban industrial heritage and the first uprisings of African slaves on the island.

Added to the list are the Urban Historical (foundational center), Underwater (Naval Battle Archaeological Park 1898), and Funerary, which is the open-air museum in the Santa Ifigenia cemetery.

In this last lie the remains of two great men of Cuban history: National Hero Jose Marti and the eternal leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro Ruz.
