HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 7(ACN) The 26th International Book Fair 2017 will open its doors on February 9th with some 700 new titles. This year's fair is dedicated to Dr. Armando Hart and Canada as guest nation.
Edel Morales Vice President of the Cuban Book Institute said on Friday during a press conference in Havana that the Cuban capital will welcome over 300 participants from 36 countries turning the occasion as one of the most attractive cultural events in the country.
On its party, Patrick Parisot, Canadian ambassador to Cuba, expressed it is an honor for his country to be guest nation in such an important event and added Canada will contribute with a sample of its best literature in recent years, including books from 30 authors among them Margaret Atwood, 2008 Principe de Asturias Prize.
Canada is grateful for the invitation and it's the best way to celebrate 150 years of the Commonwealth and over 70 years of uninterrupted diplomatic relations with Cuba, said the ambassador.
This edition will also be a moment to re-read the work of Armando Hart who will publish a selection of texts written between 1952 and 2016 entitled, Cuba, a Liberation Culture.
In words read by his companion in life, Eloisa Carreras, the revolutionary thanked the Book Institute for the honor and highlighted the life of the leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro who described as an example of ethics and firm principles.
He said that being a follower of Jose Marti and Fidel Castro has been the only way to be happy; I accept this honor with the only condition of allowing me to continue as a soldier of ideas, expressed the 86 year old intellectual, recognized as one of the main historic figures of the Revolution.
Among some of the activities in the book fair are the awards like the Alejo Carpentier, Nicolas Guillen and the 2016 National Literature Prizes in addition to the 6th edition of the Latin American and Caribbean Young Writers Encounter.
The 26th International Book Fair 2017 will be held from February 9th to the 19th in Havana and will extend to other provinces until April 16th.
