Cuba´s Patron Saint Praised by Arts Exhibit on 100th Anniversary

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 8 (acn) An exhibition in Havana by a group of 34 artists and poets is marking the one hundredth year of the proclamation of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre as Cuba´s Patron Saint.

The artistic sample displayed at cultural institution was organized in 12 days include paintings of landscapes describing Cuban identity, everyday life and the challenges being faced by Cuban society.

Outstanding Cuban artists like Ruben Alpizar, Alicia Leal, Reynerio Tamayo, Rocio Garcia among many others took part of the project,

In the name of all 34 artists, Lazaro Navarrete said that the exhibit was done in a harmonious spirit and advocated long life for the project so that it keeps growing and be there for a long time.

Local history says that on September 24, 1915 a group of independence war vets signed a letter at the Shrine of the Virgin of Charity, in Santiago de Cuba province, which was addressed to Pope Benedict XV requesting the proclamation of the virgin as Cuba´s Patron Saint. The Pope ordered the proclamation on May 10, 1916.
