HAVANA, Cuba, May 19 (acn) Political, cultural and academic authorities of Cyprus paid tribute to Leo Brouwer, famed Cuban composer, guitarist and orchestra director visiting that country, diplomatic sources informed on Wednesday.
According to Prensa Latina, Egli Pantelaki, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus presided over a gala in honor of the artist in the Axiothea Cultural Center of Nicosia, with the participation of government and parliament officials and civil society organizations, among others.
In speeches by Cuban ambassador Aramis Fuente; the president of the Pancyprian Association of Classical Guitar, Christos Savopoulos; and the deputy rector of the University of Cyprus, Athanasios Gagatsis, the life and work of the maestro and the richness and universality of his compositions were acknowledged.
Brouwer arrived in Cyprus on Sunday to participate in the first Classical Guitar Festival, which named after him and as a tribute to his life and work, will be held in the city of Paphos on May 19-22, the source added.
The Festival was organized by the Pancyprian Association of Classical Guitar and the municipality of that city, and is sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus and the Cuban Embassy.
The meeting is part of activities prior to the investiture of Paphos as Cultural Capital of Europe in 2017.
