HAVANA, Cuba, May 10 (acn) Cuban writer Alexander Aguilar, from Granma province, won the first prize of Poetry in the 6th International Contest El Parnaso del Nuevo Mundo, organized in Peru by the magazine of the same name.
Retorno is the title of the winning work, which is a sonnet without rhyme with abundant images referring to the absence of the father of the author, such as wide hole of past and stainless amazement.
Aguilar, who lives in the mountainous municipality of Guisa, told ACN that the most important thing is the confirmation of doing well on the difficult path of verses, an encouragement to continue writing often and defend the value of the decimas (ten syllable verses), with rich tradition in eastern Cuba.
Also a winner of the Cucalambe (2012) Iberian American Contest, Aguilar added that he is currently working on the book Causas pendientes, and on another one for children.
The award includes a medal, a certificate, the publication of the work in the Spanish American magazine El Parnaso del Nuevo Mundo and the delivery of 25 copies to the winners.
Also winning first places in Poetry were Mexican Amaranta and Andrea Cristina Heras of Ecuador, while in Short Story prizes were for Argentinean Tale Ksybala and Marvin Ignacio Salvador Calero, of Nicaragua.
The jury was composed of writers Zully Garcia (Uruguay), Mabel Gaitan (Nicaragua), Cristian Rivera (Peru), Lourdes Flores (Mexico), Camila Mardones (Chile), Julia Church (Argentina) and Liliana Cardona (Colombia).
Alexander Aguilar is the author of the books Bajo el pretexto de los dias, Nosotros los cobardes, Erase una vez la duda and El recurso del miedo.
