Cuban Writer Joins Puerto Rican Academy of Spanish Language

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 17 (acn) Cuban writer Leonardo Padura, along with Sergio Ramirez of Nicaragua, and Antonio Skarmeta, of Chile, joined the Puerto Rican Academy of Spanish Language as corresponding academicians, as confirmed by several media Web sites.

The announcement was made today during a ceremony held parallel to the 7th International Congress on Spanish Language, under way in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in which representatives of 22 academies in Spain, Latin America, the United States and the Philippines take part.
According to the statutes of the Puerto Rican Academy, corresponding academicians are people not living in Puerto Rico who are known for their literary or scientific contribution in the territory or outside the borders of that island.
Leonardo Padura, winner of the National Literature Prize and the Princess of Asturias Prize in 2012 and 2015, respectively, now joins a select list where names like Luis Rafael Sanchez, Julio Ortega, Ana Lydia Vega, Rosario Ferre and Bruno Rosario Chandelier appear.
