International Book Fair closes doors in Havana

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 22 (acn) The 25th Cuba 2016 International Book Fair closed on Monday after being visited by over 12 thousand people who attended professional, academic and literary activities, and hundreds of thousands that went to buy books in the main Havana venue of San Carlos de la Cabaña fortress.

In her closing remarks of the fair, Uruguayan Education and Culture minister Maria Julia Muñoz, stressed and appreciated the spaces where Havana citizens were able to admire the literary works of her country, which was the guest to the event.

She said the fair boosts possible joint work between the Cuban Culture ministry and her office that strengthen historic links between the two nations.

Fair director Eduardo Fernandez announced the prizes to the best stands, including the United Nations System, which took the first prize and Editorial Guash publishing house, as well as the Latin American Literature Agency.

The president of the Cuban Book Institute Zuleica Roman said this fair was marked by enthusiasm, large participation and flavored with a high-quality artistic and cultural program.

Roman stressed the participation of 172 authors and 41 artists from 37 nations, out of which Uruguay, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Spain, the U.S., Russia and Poland were highly represented.

She also said that over 234 thousand books were commercialized by Cuban publishing houses during the fair, and that the event was followed live on the internet by over three million people in some 40 countries.

The book fair, which was dedicated to intellectuals Lina de Feria and Rogelio Martinez Fure, will now travel the rest of Cuban provinces till late April.
