International Congress on Higher Education kicks off in Havana

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 15 (acn) The 10th International Congress on Higher Education was inaugurated on Monday in Havana with a conference by the Cuban Minister of Higher Education Rodolfo Alarcon regarding the centers, sustainable development and challenges for 2030.

During the activity, held at the Karl Marx Theater, the General Sub Director of UNESCO greeted the participants amounting to over 2 thousand from 60 countries.

The Havana Convention Center will be home to the 10th Congress to begin on Tuesday and run until the 19th, however certain activities began in the early hours of Monday at the Hotel Palco.

Mindrey Marrero, communication advisor of the MES, told ACN that among the collateral events is the Rector's forum with the assistance of over 200 higher institute directives among them Spain, Germany, France, Mozambique and Grenada.

The education specialist commented that this will be a chance to debate on the social responsibility of the universities, cooperation and international projects, among others.

She emphasized that other renowned figures participating in the event are Argentinean political scientist Atilio Boron, Brazilian theologist FreiBetto and Nobel Peace prize laureate and former President of East Timor, Jose Manuel Ramos Horta.

Among other events Marrero mentioned the master conference from Monsenor Enrico Dal Covolo, Rector of the Vatican University and a panel dedicated to the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro on his upcoming 90 th birthday.

The largest delegations to the congress are Nicaragua, Ecuador, Mexico, Colombia and Brazil in addition to an increase of US academics regarding previous years, said Marrero.

Regarding the scientific program of the 10th International Congress on Higher Education, the Cuban specialist said that 19 workshops will be underway, meetings and symposiums regarding the training of professors, medical education, economy, financing the education centers and evaluation of quality.
