HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 15 (acn) Ruben Dario, director of the Matanzas puppet troupe Teatro Las Estaciones, was awarded by the Association of Latin Entertainment Critics (ACE) of New York, along with other Cuban playwrights and theater performers, according to official information on the festival's Web site.
The renowned playwright received two separate awards in the categories of Best Production and Direction of Children's Theatre for the staging of Por el Monte Carule, a piece he staged for the groups SEA, Pregones and Teatro Rodante Puertorriqueño.
Also in the category of Direction, Cuban George Riveron won the award in period theater, with Genios: Lorca y Dalí; while actor Ivan Garcia, a member of Teatro Las Estaciones, was the winner in the Most Outstanding Performer section, for his role in Por el Monte Carule.
Also from the Matanzas company, designer Zenen Calero was honored in Best Musical Theater production, for his work in the staging of La Gloria, un cabaret latino, directed and produced by Manuel Moran, director of SEA.
Likewise, actress Zulema Clares received recognition in Best Female Co-performance for her role in La tía Julia y el escribidor.
The festival, dedicated this time to Ricardo Barber and Ana Margarita Martinez Casado, two important figures of the New York Hispanic theater, will end on 29 March in the Mexican Festival restaurant of the so-called Big Apple, with the official ceremony to hand over the awards, created 48 years ago by the ACE.
The Association of Latin Entertainment Critics of New York is a U.S. press institution dedicated to Hispanic theater.
