Santiago, July 24 (acn).- A cultural gala with over 200 local and guest artists will mark the 500th anniversary of the founding in 1515 of eastern Santiago de Cuba city at 12 sharp midnight.
The gala´s artistic director, Reynaldo Lopez, told reporters here that the event will recall the history of the city, its setting up as a villa, the 1953 assault on the Moncada garrison by a group of revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro, the armed uprising on November 30, 1956 and the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959.
Under the slogan, "Santiago de Cuba, 500 years of History and Culture," the gala will also recalled outstanding figures of Cuban revolutionary history and will feature renowned Cuban musicians, such as pianist Frank Fernandez and poet Waldo Leyva, who arrived here for the occasion on Thursday to join the local artists.
The gala will lead to a toast with Santiago de Cuba 500 rum at the history City Hall, next to the popular and centrally located Cespedes Park and at 12 sharp the people will mark the 500 birthday of the city, with artworks amidst the ongoing and so popular carnivals of Santiago de Cuba.
