HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 7 (acn) The recent Festival of Young Filmmakers of the Cuban Film Institute closed doors with a call for a legislation that protects the local movie production.
The organizers of the movie event issued a brief note on the bulletin of the showcase of the young moviemakers reiterating the need and urgency for a Film Law and expressing support of a group of filmmakers that have continued to demand a real dialog with the highest institutional levels.
Since 2003, a group of filmmakers from various generations have been proposing a new system for the Cuban audiovisual production that guarantees a legal framework in tune with today´s reality.
Officials with the Cuban Film Institute told PL news agency that they agree with the filmmakers about the need for a Film Production Law, but they need to add legislators to the proposal.
The issue has triggered debates at the Institute and at the recent congress of the Association of Cuban Writers and Artists. The promoters of the idea are inspired by similar legislations in Venezuela and Ecuador, which have favored national film production by legally protecting the work of filmmakers.
