Cuba Digital presents books of renowned South African author

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 18 (ACN) The book When a Woman Dreams, with stories written by the iconic South African writer Olive Schreiner (1855-1920), was presented in the 33rd Havana International Book Fair, where South Africa is the guest of honor.

Olga Sanchez Guevara, who translated these pages together with Karin Companioni Sanchez, shared details about this fascinating book, which sparked her interest in South African literature and led her to study Schreiner, a pivotal figure in the history of feminism.

"I knew Olive Schreiner's name from her famous work The Story of an African Farm, recognized as the first South African novel and initially published under a male pseudonym," Sanchez Guevara explained. “Such was the success of the novel that it was reprinted more than 15 times during the author's lifetime and became a best seller of its time”.

Olga and her daughter Karín, together with the Cuba Digital team, embarked on a research that gave us When a Woman Dreams, which features four stories and an introduction to the essay Women and Labour, a crucial feminist text about Schreiner's keen perception of the social and political realities of her time.

“Not only does When a Woman Dreams rekindles the voices of a bygone era, it also invites readers to reflect on struggles and achievements that still resonate today”, Ms. Sanchez emphasized. “She was a prolific writer and a visionary who addressed racial and political issues with startling clarity and became a paradigm of contemporary feminism that keeps inspiring new generations to dream and fight for a more just world, always placing the role of women at the forefront”.
