HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 4 (acn) The 1st concert called the Guillerm Barret in Memoriam Drum Festival was dedicated to the late American researcher Chuck Silverman recognized by his contributions to the execution of the patterns of the Afro Caribbean percussion rhythms.
This international festival held in Havana until Sunday is headed by Cuban musician Giraldo Piloto is paying tribute to the work and legacy of Guillermo Barreto, one of the most proliferate instrumentalist of the last five decades in Cuba.
The inaugural presentation includes talents like Rodney Barreto of the group Afrocuba from Matanzas and Yoruba Andabo among others to be held at the Mella Theater Tuesday night in a multi-cultural event.
For five days Havana will be the scene of contests, master classes, conferences, jam sessions and concerts that will gather Cuban and international artists that love drums.
Among some of the international figures are US Marvin Smitty Smith and Memo Acevedo, Canadian Aldo Mazza, Venezuela Manuel Moreno and Norwegian Haakon Graf and Per Mathisen.
Under the name of "The Best percussionists from Cuba and the World", these guests will perform Wednesday at the Mella Theater alongside Enrique Pla, Oliver Valdes, Tomas Ramos (El Panga), Juan Carlos Rojas (El Peje) and bass player Jorge Reyes.
The XIV Drum Festival, with the participation of over a thousand artists, will ratify, according to Piloto, that percussion is the indispensable root of Cuban music.
