Cuban National Ballet School to be named Fernando AlonsoHAVANA, Cuba, Jan 28 (acn) The National Ballet School of Cuba will assume from now the name of the teacher Fernando Alonso, worldwide recognized as the creator of his methodology, in ceremony held by the Ministry of Culture of Cuba, Prensa Latina news agency reported today.

The proposal was made by Aurora Bosch, former prima ballerina with the National Ballet of Cuba (BNC by its Spanish acronym) in the 8th Congress of the National Union of the Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC by its Spanish acronym), held in April 2014, which was unanimously approved.

The reason for the name change is the need to rescue a teacher who trained a lot of dancers and instilled the art of teaching into them from youth.

Fernando Alonso founded the BNC in 1948 and also the Cuban ballet school along with his brother Alberto Alonso and his then wife Alicia Alonso.

He received the Benois Dance Award, and until his death, on July 2013, participated in rehearsals, lectures and classes and he also founded the Prodanza de Cuba center and the Ballet of Camagüey.

The day chosen for the ceremony is January 28 to match the event with the birthday of José Martí, Cuba's national hero .
