Bay of Pigs commemorations continue in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 19 (ACN) The House of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA Cultural) continues today its special program for the Week of Victory against the U.S.-backed Bay of Pigs invasion 62 years ago with events such as Latin American Spaces, ALBA and its Context and The Cuban Revolution in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In coordination with the Venezuelan Embassy and Cuba’s Union of Historians and Institute of History, ALBA Cultural’s agenda also includes a panel, in called April 19 in Venezuelan, Cuban and Latin American history, about the surrender of the mercenaries that day in the evening, less than 60 hours after their invasion, which left considerable military and civilian casualties in its wake.

Dawn was breaking on April 17, 1961 when a counterrevolutionary brigade armed, trained and transported by the U.S.A. disembarked at the Zapata Swamp, on the southern coast of the province of Matanzas, only to be countered and defeated in less than three days by a large-scale popular mobilization.

The Bay of Pigs invasion, part of the CIA’s Operation Pluto, became Imperialism’s first major defeat in Latin America and ended up with the U.S. paying the Cuban people compensation for damages.
