Latin American Film Festival Travels to the Neighborhoods

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 27 (acn) The revolutionary experience of an outdoor travelling cinema that visited the most remote Cuban communities nearly half a century ago is now back as part of the 36th International Festival of the New Latin American Film.

Bearing in mind that Cubans less often go to the movie theaters, festival organizers will take the films to the neighborhoods by using an inflatable screen.

For Ivan Giroud, who is the director of the Festival, this initiative is like returning to the times of the outdoor traveling cinema since "the important thing here is taking the culture wherever we can," he noted.

The traveling cinema gained momentum here in 1961, when a truck was remodeled and adapted a projector to go to farmer communities with classic films.

By the end of 1962, there were 32 mobile cinemas in Cuba with a growing audience of over one million 250 fans. The popular traveling movies on trucks visited squares, schools, hospitals, factories and farms as it was recorded in a documentary film entitled Por Primera Vez or For the First Time, by film maker Octavio Cortazar.
