Statement by CARICOM against new measures by the US government against Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, May 15 (acn) In response to the recent measures announced by the United States, theTwenty-Second Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), agreed to issue a statement, attached to the official Communiqué of the aforementioned meeting (May 13-14 in Grenada), in which it was reiterated the firm support of the CARICOM for the lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States to Cuba.

Below, the text of the statement:
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is concerned about the new measures under the Helms-Burton Act Title III announced by the United States Government that would strengthen the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba. CARICOM denounces the application of extraterritorial laws and measures that are opposite to international law.
The Caribbean Community notes with the utmost concern that the application of these new measures will also have a greater adverse impact on the socio-economic development of Cuba and the well-being of the Cuban people. CARICOM reiterates its support for the principles of international law, as well as its firm belief that economic development and stability in the region contribute to international peace and security.
