HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 1 (ACN) La Camaronera del Litoral Sur (CALISUR), the largest shrimp farm in Cuba and inaugurated by Fidel Castro in December 1986, broke its yearly production record of two thousand 150 tons (achieved for the first time in 2017, despite still having 3 more months to close the year.
Located in the Granma municipality of Rio Cauto, the base business unit has already obtained more than 2,160 tons, which is a reason for great joy in the staff, which received in April the flag of National Vanguard, awarded by the Union of Workers in the Food Industry and Fisheries.
High levels of capture, artificial breeding and survival, and industrial efficiency characterize the entity, which since 2016 shows a growing trend, to leave far that record of two thousand 013.8 tons, reached in 2006.
Mario Sariol Romero, who has been director for 13 years, told the Cuban News Agency that everyone is very enthusiastic and eager to continue contributing.
He explained that the will of the nearly 500 workers, the technological improvements and the discipline in their application have been fundamental to achieve ascending results.
He assured that if everything continues well they must complete some two thousand 600 tons, which would be very favorable for the national economy, since the ton of the tasty crustacean is commercialized to a price of more than four thousand dollars in the international market.
We have exported 89 percent of production, and the rest has been allocated to domestic tourism, he added. Workers in this farm earn two thousand 200 pesos monthly, on average, although some get much more for the results in their ponds.
He said that the technological improvements implemented shorten crop cycles and favor the average weight of shrimp, which is 14.3 grams.
Roberto Guisado Reyes, head of the quality group in CALISUR, told ACN that they were sure they would surpass the record.
He stressed that they also maintain high levels of quality, with compliance with international standards, which allows them to increase their exports, especially to Europe and Asia, and meet the plans for delivery to domestic tourism.
As published in the Granma press in 1986, when Fidel Castro visited the shrimp farm he said: "It has been very instructive for me to visit this center, where I have been impressed by the high technical level, the enthusiasm and the revolutionary and human quality of its workers".
CALISUR owns 957 hectares destined to shrimp farming in a hundred water mirrors, which demands high levels of technological and labor discipline, with constant monitoring and respect for the time allotted for each procedure.
