HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 28 (ACN) Cuban diplomat Josefina Vidal, handed over to the general governor of Canada Julie Payette her diplomatic credentials as new ambassador to Canada.
During the ceremony, held at Rideau Hall, the official residence of the governor, in Ottawa, Vidal expressed the Canadian government official the Cuban government's interest in expanding and strengthening traditional relations between the two countries, according to the Cuban embassy in Canada.
Before being appointed ambassador to Canada, Vidal headed the North America Division at the Cuban Foreign Ministry. She played a crucial role in negotiations between Havana and Washington after December 17, 2014, when President Raul Castro and his US counterpart Barack Obama announced their decision to reestablish diplomatic relations between their countries and start a process towards full normalization of links.
Josefina Vidal also was the first secretary at the Cuban Interest Section in Washington form 1999 to 2003 and later took the North America Division at the Cuban Foreign Ministry.
