HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 20 (ACN) The director general of the U.S. Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Fernandez de Cossío, received a bipartisan delegation of U. S. congressmen and senators in this capital today, led by Senator Patrick Leahy, (D-VT).
Fernández de Cossío commented on his Twitter account, @CarlosFdeCossio, that the dialogue was constructive and sincere.
Leahy, vice-chairman of the Senate allotment committee, arrived in Havana on Sunday with fellow senators Ron Wyden, Oregon, and Gary Peters, Michigan; and representatives Kathy Castor, Florida; Jim McGovern, Massachusetts; and Susan Davis, California.
Leahy has been one of the most active players within the US Senate in defense of the Havana-Washington rapprochement that began in December 2014, a process affected by the hostile posture of the Donald Trump administration since its arrival at the White House.
In June 2017, Trump announced the intensification of the policy of economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, and eliminated some of the progress made in bilateral ties between 2014 and 2017, during which diplomatic relations were also re-established and embassies reopened.
Representative Kathy Castor's office said in a statement that the congressional delegation will meet in Cuba with experts in the fields of education, economics and biotechnology to discuss the possibilities of improving economic opportunities for both peoples.
The note reads that the bicameral group intends to address the health and safety of U. S. diplomats, after the alleged acoustic incidents that served as a pretext for the Trump administration to curb bilateral ties.
Johana Tablada, deputy director general of the U. S. Department of Foreign Affairs, commented on the Ministry's Twitter account that at today's meeting Carlos Fernández de Cossío emphasized that there is no evidence of attacks against U. S. diplomats in Cuba.
The congressmen will be in Cuba until next Wednesday, when they will hold a press conference and during the stay will evaluate, as they said, the impact of the measures taken by the U. S. president since he took office.
