MATANZAS, Cuba, Jan 23 (ACN) Members of the scientific community examined on Tuesday in Matanzas proposals of financial mechanisms for prioritized ecosystem management like the Bay of Matanzas, Varadero Beach Resort and Zapata Swamp during a workshop held in the city.
The University of Matanzas was the site for the encounter, which is sponsored by the territorial delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) dedicated to the analysis of the implementation of tariffs, insurance and other economic alternatives for sustainable management.
The coordinator of the Environmental Observatory Academy (COSTATENAS) told ACN that they pretend to begin collecting taxes for the use of the Bay and Varadero Beach where companies with high earnings can contribute to the preservation of the ecosystems.
In the case of the Bay of Matanzas, a toll will guarantee the creation of a fund that will allow the execution of different projects in favor of conservation, also to reduce vulnerabilities before climate change in tune with the State Plan known as Tarea Vida (Work for Life), said the researcher.
Dr. Cabrera recalled that Cuba has a tax law approved by the National Assembly of the Peoples Power on July 23rd 2012 which establishes the payment of taxes aimed at protecting the country's natural resources and its compatibility with economic development.
The Director of CITMA's environmental department in Matanzas, Angel Alfonso explained that the province has the Bay of Havana's successful experience as a reference.
This meeting constitutes an experience for an international project with the participation of the province taking into account the available knowledge in creating financial mechanisms in support of prioritized ecosystem management, said Alfonso.
