HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 10 (acn) Cuba was elected on Thursday a member of UNESCO’s Inter-governmental Council of the International Program for the Development of Communications.
According to Prensa Latina News Agency, Cuba was selected to represent Latin America and the Caribbean, together with El Salvador, Honduras and Dominican Republic.
The entity is the only multilateral forum of the UN system that mobilized the international community to debate on the advances of communication and its promotion in the developing countries.
Its Inter-governmental Council is made up by 39 countries and among its functions are the elaboration of policies for the implementation of the program, definition and approval of its priorities; in addition to evaluating the projects that is presented, among other work.
Cuba, through its UNESCO-Havana Office, has presented several projects to the entity: the most recent refers to issues like the development of local capacities for press coverage in environmental issues; and the leadership of women journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Other countries that were elected to the Inter-governmental Council are Britain, Sweden, Russia, Lithuania, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Pakistan, Palau, Thailand, Benin, Namibia, Saudi Arabia and Libya.
