HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 4 (ACN) A network of thirteen earthquake accelerographs will be installed in the main city of Guantanamera as part of the international project Prepared Cities and Alerts for Seismic Hazards, implemented to improve management in the face of the danger of such events in eastern Cuba.
The initiative, led by the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), in addition to increasing the quality of monitoring the seismic activity of the region, will strengthen the capacity of local authorities to respond to the occurrence of such events.
Juan Centeno Durrutí, coordinator of the project in the province, explained to ACN that the equipment, from China, use the technology of data transmission by mobile telephony and transfer the information in real time to the central station in Santiago de Cuba to be analyzed and recorded by CENAIS experts.
Centeno Durrutí stressed the value of this system for the rapid performance of Civil Defense because in case of a major earthquake, the network allows to create maps that reflect the sites where the shock is greater and prioritize efforts in that area.
These instruments also allow the calculation of soil response to earthquakes in order to identify the areas with the greatest vulnerabilities for the construction of population settlements or works of social interest, he said.
The specialist said that this network will be expanded later with the incorporation of about fifty accelerographs, distributed in the municipalities of Baracoa, Imías and San Antonio del Sur and whose execution is equivalent to more than 200 thousand convertible pesos (CUC) and around one million Cuban pesos.
Although this project was completed in October 2016, implementation of associated investments is still ongoing, under the auspices of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment, and the financing of foreign donors such as the Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid and Protection Of the European Union.
