Cattle herds get water in trucks in central Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 21 (ACN) The intense drought affecting central Cuba has forced ranchers, both from private and state enterprises, to take water in trucks to herds gathering over 31,500 heads.

The situation has improved some from the beginning of the year, when 40,000 heads of cattle had to receive the water in trucks to survive, the biggest amount since 2014, as reported by sources of the Agriculture Ministry.

In order to palliate the drought in this province, the most affected in the country, several state ranch installed solar panels to provide energy to water pumps in newly dug wells.

In May, the rains helped the situation of the pastures, but they were not enough to replenish the underground water systems, and three of the most important reservoirs are completely dry.

The National Water Resources Institute is sending crews to drill deep wells to inject fresh water to the aquifers to stop the salinization process that could damage the environment for years to come.

At the same time, other crews work intensively repairing water systems to stop the leaking of the pumped water that sometimes is as high as 50 percent.
