Havana, Cuba, May 3 (acn) The Presidential Council of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) is meeting in this capital to discuss the agreements reached at its 17th Congress in Durban, South Africa.
According to George Mavrikos, secretary general of that international organization, the appointment will also allow assessing the working strategies for the next five years in different regions of the world.
It will also be a moment to pay homage to Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, who made history by his postulates in favor of the humble people, he said.
The Greek leader expressed the solidarity of the entity he directs with union movements of Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela and recognized the right of the Venezuelan people to self-determination, without the intervention of third parties.
He informed that most of the leaders of the Council participated in the gigantic march of the people of Havana at José Martí Revolution Square on May 1st.
He recalled that the presentation of Ulises Guilarte, general secretary of the Cuban Workers' Federation, as the first vice-president of the WFTU, is an acknowledgment of the work carried out by the Cuban trade union movement.
The WFTU is an international trade union organization founded in 1945, it currently has 92 million members and its main objective is to ensure that the most basic rights of all workers in the world to be guaranteed.
