Havana, Cuba, Apr 24 (acn) The International May Day Brigade began their program on Monday in Havana with a ceremony with the participation of 205 solidarity activists from 29 countries in all five continents.
The Brigadistas came as far as Australia to participate alongside the Cuban people in the rally to celebrate International Workers Day. According to representatives from the Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) 57 activists from the United States are participating for the first time in this international brigade. Most of the participants are from the Chicago Solidarity Coalition and members of Black Lives Matter.
Inaugurating the program of activities was the President of the Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, Fernando Gonzalez who welcomed the visitors to Cuba and stressed that they will experience the joy of the Cuban people during their participation in the May Day rally. He said that in other countries, many experience violent demonstrations, demands for better working conditions, among others. But in Cuba, he said, "you will experience joy, celebration, unity among Cubans from all walks of life.
Fernando Gonzalez, one of the Cuban Five said that his release as well as his other four brothers was thanks to the Cuban people's struggle and friends from around the world who also fought for their return to their country and family and thanked them for their tireless support.
The brigadistas will carry out a program of activities, which includes voluntary work in the countryside, visit places of interests, exchange with the Cuban people and participate in the May Day Rally next Monday in Havana's Revolution Square.
