Reservoirs in Guantanamo Suffer Intense Drought

Reservoirs in Guantanamo Suffer Intense DroughtGuantanamo, Cuba, Mar 30 (acn) The province of Guantanamo currently accumulates a little over a third of water in its main reservoirs for which it was designed: 160 million cubic meters when about a month is left for the so called rainy season is to begin.

The intense drought has practically left La Yaya, largest reservoir in the territory, without water and has affected the distribution of the precious liquid to the Ivan Rodriguez firm located in the Niceto Perez municipality and situated close to the only Cuban semi desert.

The Command Post of the Provincial Office of Water Resources announced that the Jaibo reservoir, second most important, is also in a critical state with 45.8 million cubic meters, equivalent to 38 percent of what it is capable of holding at one time.

Juan Carlos Rodriguez, sub delegate of the territory's Water Resources Office, pointed out that cycle of the distribution of water in several Popular Councils has been reduced with the objective of extending the reserves of the Faustino Perez reservoir.

The Faustino Perez reservoir in charge of supplying over 200 thousand people in the municipality of Guantanamo and Manuel Tames, only has 196 days left of water. According to experts, it can wait for the arrival of rain above all those predicted in the Guaso River Basin, its supply source.

In the valley of Caujeri more to the east, horticultural emporium of the municipality of San Antonio del Sur and most important of the province, is less critical.

This difference was seen in the existing volume of the Los Asientos and Pozo Azul reservoirs, both with over 70 percent, this last thanks to the 450 liters per second provided by the Sabanalamar River.

The historic average of rain behaves at 76.2 percent and by the end of the first trimester of the year the municipalities of Baracoa, San Antonio del Sur, Imias and Yatera (the rainiest in the country) is below the provincial average.
