HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 7(ACN) Economic assessment of goods and ecosystem services and facing climate change in Matanzas, the island's most vulnerable province, are among the priorities of the local scientific community for 2017.
Some 50 percent of its coast are low or very low, circumstance that makes this region more vulnerable to high salinity, increase in the sea level and other effects attributed to climate change.
According to the press conference, Matanzas will be the only Cuban province that will apply to all its municipalities an international project to quantify the benefits of the ecosystems financed by the World Environment Fund.
Angel Alfonso, Specialized from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), said that the actions developed in Matanzas to relieve the effects of the climate are decisive to national security due to the territory being one of the main food production areas on the island.
The expert said that they are currently calling out the attention of those that make decisions and provide the necessary tools, including software that will allow business executives to incorporate environmental dimension to their work.
Alfonso, Director of CITMA's Environmental Unit pointed out programs will continue in 2017 to adapt to climate change in the municipalities of Marti, north of the province and Zapata Swamp, the largest wetland area in the Caribbean to the south.
Angel said that it is an advantage to have broad information obtained thanks to the network of local meteorological stations as basis to achieve a sustained economic development, rationing the resources and avoid environmental difficulties.
