PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba, Jan 4 (acn) In 2016, Pinar del Río became for the second consecutive year in the province to achieve the lowest infant mortality in Cuba and this time recorded only 2.1 deaths per thousand live births, a result that is a record for the western territory.
Dr. Roselia Sánchez Triana, official of the maternal and child section of the Provincial Health Directorate, told ACN that during this period there were 10 deaths less than in the previous year.
She pointed out that, nevertheless, 6 248 births were reported, a figure lower by 451 than in 2015.
This feat was achieved, she said, thanks to the efforts of primary health care professionals, the Maternal and Child Health Program (PAMI by its Spanish acronym) and the groups of Neonatology, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, among others.
The municipalities of Los Palacios, Sandino and San Juan y Martínez did not report deaths in this period, which speaks in favor of the duty of the medical personnel in the different instances.
Pinar del Río has six maternal homes, one regional hospital and two provincial ones, institutions in which quality services are provided to save lives, in addition to child and mother care commissions.
In 2015, the province ended with a rate of 3.4 deaths per thousand live births, also the lowest of the country that year.
