Cuban and German port authorities sign MoU

Cuban and German port authorities sign MoUHAVANA, Cuba, Nov 3 (acn) Cuban and German port authorities signed the first memorandum of understanding in this transport area with view to trace the business patterns that may arise in attending cruises.

Manuel Perez, director general of the Cuban Port Administration, and Wolfgang Hurtienne, CEO of the Hamburg Port Authority, signed the document in the field of the 34th International Fair of Havana (FIHAV 2016 by its Spanish acronym).

The ceremony was attended by Naima Alfonso, Deputy Minister of Transport; Antonio Carrricarte, first vice-president of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, both from Cuba, and Dr. Rolf Bösinger, Vice Minister of Economy, Transport and Innovation of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Alfonso told ACN that this legal instrument is the first step between Cuba and Germany in the maritime branch, which will be monitored in order to take advantage of the port capacities from both countries.

Perez emphasized the international importance of the port of Hamburg, with wide operational potential, and highlighted the possibility of acquiring experiences from the so-called locomotive of Europe and of strengthening bilateral ties.

In addition, Hurtienne expressed the interest shown by German businessmen to participate in this fair, considered the largest commercial exchange in the Caribbean, and which exhibits the opportunities for foreign investment.

Regarding bilateral trade ties, Carricarte commented that Germany is one of the main partners of Cuba in Europe, with a stable exchange, although the exports of the Caribbean island should be increased.

Furthermore, he said that the German technological potential could accompany the Cuban economy in its updating process, and considered that this is still very modest in the field of foreign investment in the Caribbean nation.

FIHAV 2016, a meeting that brings together more than 3,500 exhibitors from 73 countries, concludes on Friday.
