The UNDP Supports Cuba in Recovery after Damages Caused by Hurricane MatthewHAVANA, Cuba, Oct 25 (acn) The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) supports the recovery of Baracoa, Maisi, Imias and San Antonio del Sur, the municipalities most affected by in eastern Cuba after the passage of Hurricane Matthew.

Myrta Kaulard, UNDP resident representative to Havana, told ACN that, as immediate response, a first delivery to national institutions was made, consisting of almost 9,700 canvas and 20 mills to turn rubble into construction material.
She explained that the UNDP is currently acquiring another 9,000 canvas, 7,500 cooking kits, 5,740 mattresses and 7,574 sheets, and plans to buy zinc roofs, which can alleviate the needs of part of the hurricane victims.
Based on the experience of more than 45 years of working in Cuba, the UNDP has begun works to support recovery in a resilient way, which implies the strengthening of people's capabilities, their housing and communities, in order to contribute to anticipate hurricanes and recover from them and be able to face a crisis in any context of development.
The cooperation of the UNDP will also include the recovery of agricultural farms, small industries, the tourist sector of Baracoa, and alleviate the damages caused by the hurricane to the region's environmental heritage, indispensable for the sustainability of life.
The UNDP and the entire system of the United Nations in Cuba ratify their solidarity with hurricane victims, and acknowledge the efforts made by Cuban authorities to prevent the loss of human lives as well as the speedy recovery of the island's easternmost region, ratified Kaulard.
