HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 30 (acn) The Cuban Camerata Romeu Group and the Chicago Children's Choir shared the stage on Wednesday at Havana's San Francisco de Asis Basilica where music was the protagonist and not the language.
The Cuban group, directed by ZenaidaRomeu opened the recital with the Final Obligado symphony by composer Carlos Farinas and interpreted pieces by Hernan Lopez Nussa and Guido Lopez Gavilan.
The US group, directed by Josephine Lee presented themes like I Need You to Survive and Hallelujah by Canadian Leonard Cohen; La Gozadera by the Cuban group Gente de Zona with Marc Anthony.
Alexa Moster, member of the group said that their repertoire includes other classic pieces in addition to pop and modern music.
The 17 year old added that the objectives of the choir is to promote peace and unity through the principles of excellence, musical expression and education.
Zenaida Romeu told ACN: "This is an important moment for both cultures to come together. These young people do unusual and wonderful things."
Josephine Lee added that music constitutes a universal language to reach the hearts of the people.
According to the choir's official website, this group was founded in 1956 during the civil rights movement in the US and currently has 4 thousand 400 children and teenagers.
The 60 members of the choir visiting the island will perform at the Fabrica de Arte Cubano on Thursday; Friday and the San Fellipe Neri Oratorio at Old Havana accompanied by the National Choir and Saturday at the National Theater.
