HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 3 (acn) Caribbean and Central American statesmen arrived in this capital in order to attend sessions of the 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS).
One of them was Juan Carlos Varela Rodriguez, President of Panama, who sent greetings to the Cuban people and said that this meeting will contribute to strengthen the bonds of friendship and bilateral cooperation, upon his arrival at Jose Marti International Airport.
Another head of state was Luis Guillermo Solis Rivera, President of Costa Rica, who advocated the common ideal of building peace and prosperity and pointed out that the Cuban people "deserve a wonderful future."
Yaaramis Armenteros, a member of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, also officially welcomed Danilo Medina, who in May was reelected to the presidency of the Dominican Republic with nearly three million votes (62 percent of total votes).
Armenteros also greeted the president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez.
The welcoming program for dignitaries of the region included the arrival of Jimmy Morales, President of Guatemala, and Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands.
The Preparatory Meeting of Top Officials and that of the Council of Ministers of the ACS, which elected June Soomer, of St. Lucia, as new General Secretary of the Association, ended at Havana's Convention Center.
The foreign ministers reviewed the documents that will be presented on Saturday to the Heads of State and Government for approval at the final session of the 7th Summit of the organization.
The group organized this meeting almost a quarter of a century after its creation in 1994 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, following a decision of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community in 1992, in Port of Spain, capital of Trinidad and Tobago.
