SANTA CLARA, Cuba, May 11 (acn) The use of new seeds created at the National Research Institute of Tropical Viandas (INIVT by its Spanish acronym) translated in an increase of more than 82 115 tons of food, at no additional cost, in the last five years in Cuba
The introduction into the productive base of the island of novel clones of sweet potato, cassava, taro and yam is the support of this productive achievement that allows offering varieties of these foods in the national territory for most of the year.
Sergio Rodriguez Morales, INIVIT director, said that new seeds allow increasing yields by 1.1 tons per hectare (t/h), no added costs, reflecting the efficiency of the agricultural innovation.
Generally, the varieties have a productive potential higher than existing as well as tolerance to the major factors adverse to agricultural production in the country, he added.
To illustrate the importance of the work of INIVIT experts, he said that around 160 000 hectares are planted annually in Cuba distributed in all provinces, with a production of about 970,000 tons, 47 percent correspond to cassava, 36 to sweet potato and 16 to taro.
Rodriguez Morales stressed that these new varieties are being multiplied in the Biofactories all around the country, which ensures that all seedlings obtained maintain the original qualities and are free from diseases.
This practice shows that respect for the established rules allows obtaining healthy and highly productive plantations and food of good taste, color and nutritional properties, Rodriguez Morales said.
