Kirill pays tribute to Soviet internationalist soldiers

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 13 (acn) His Holiness Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus, laid a floral wreath at the Memorial to the Soviet Internationalist Soldier, in the outskirts of Havana.

Kirill, accompanied by Caridad Diego, head of the Office of Religious Affairs of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist party, arrived at the Mausoleum to pay tribute to the soldiers from the former Soviet Union who died in Cuba while in service.

The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church prayed for a few minutes while a choir sang chants of praise for the over 60 soldiers whose remains are kept in this place.

Kirill had visited this Memorial in 2008, during his third visit to Cuba.

The Memorial to the Soviet Internationalist Soldier was inaugurated on February 23, 1978 in the San Antonio de los Baños municipality, some 20 kilometers west of Havana to show the gratitude of the Cuban people to the Soviet soldiers that were stationed in Cuba to defend the Revolution.
