HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 8 (acn) ) The Cuban population still does not have a clear perception of the economic value of water that is supplied and its annual consumption currently at some 9 billion cubic meters, said Ines Maria Chapman, President of the National Institute of Water Resources (INRH).
The cost of each cubic meter supplied is 67 cents, although the price varies depending on the aqueduct system, without considering the cost in Cuban national currency or convertible pesos which would mean more, said the specialist in a recent interview published in Bohemia magazine.
She mentioned a recent study in one of the systems in a province that reported an equivalent of 24 USD, "but the prices are subsidized by the State".
Regarding the benefits of the water supply, she said that 95 percent of the population has access to water and 8 million inhabitants, of the total of 11.2, is supplied by networks, while those received by trucks that are also certified.
The specialist called out the attention that only in the canals of the irrigation systems for agriculture thatconsumes 60 percent of the country's precious liquid, over 2.5 billion cubic meters is lost.
She stressed that before this crisis they began to educate workers and officials on the need to save water and initiated sanctions those responsible of not complying with the regulations.
According to INRH statistics, 58 percent of the water pumped in the country were lost, over a third, due to leaks in homes but the President of the Water Institute estimated that 43 percent will be reduced in 2016 with investments and other measures to improve the situation.
The specialist added that the prices for some of the basic iron tools were reduced in a demand of over 6 million while production surpassed two million all produced by small industries.
The production must increase, improve quality and avoid speculation from all over, she stressed.
