HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 16 (acn) Cuba was the country chosen for the Caribbean region to participate in the 40th International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), to be held in Thailand on May 2016.
Three students from the University of Havana, united under the name UH_REFRESH were the winners of the Caribbean Regional Final of the contest, which involved a total of 44 teams from Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Jamaica.
Sandor Garcia, Abel Ramos and Norge Vizcay managed to solve nine of the 11 problems raised in the five hours of the competition, breaking thus the record of solved exercises for this geographical area, already in possession of UH.
Javier Ripoll, Cuban professor in charge of the ACM- ICPC for the Caribbean, said the competitors start receiving a situation of real life that presents some difficulty, or where some information is unknown, and they must respond to that mystery quickly developing a software offering a solution.
This is a contest where students must be able to use the programming language to solve practical and time trial problems, plus it requires working in teams, having good knowledge of Mathematics, Physics and English, because the questions are raised in that language, Ripoll added.
The University of Computing Sciences (UCI) hosted for the seventh time the participants from Cuba and Jamaica in this Caribbean event, webcasted to Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Argentina, and Bolivia, which simultaneously held the competences to choose the winners in Latin America.
The ACM -ICPC is the oldest and most prestigious competition of its kind and UCI serves as training camp for those attending these contests from universities across Cuba, as well as tutors competitors for the International Olympiad in Informatics, conceived to Pre-University students.
