Debates at UN General Assembly on US blockade on Cuba start

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 27 (acn) The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) began this morning in New York the discussion of the draft resolution that urges the United States to lift the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba.
When in 1992 the island first introduced a draft resolution condemning the US policy, many felt it would not be more than a symbolic opposition, although it was approved by most UN members at the time.
However, 23 years later, the global support against this disastrous policy has grown to leave isolated the aggressor and in fact is one of the reasons why diplomatic relations between Cuba and Washington were restored, and Cuba will not yield an iota of its principles.
At meetings this year of the international organization, Ban Ki-Moon, its Secretary General will use the occasion to present a report in which the world's rejection of the policy of blockade against Cuba is collected, in which appear the opinion of 155 governments, leaders of the European Union (EU), the Vatican and 30 international organizations.
The text expresses concern about the extraterritoriality of the blockade, supported among others by the Helms-Burton law, enacted in the late nineties (1996), which seeks to prevent trade between Cuba and the rest of the world.
In September, world leaders and Heads of State and Government opposed during their speeches the US siege imposed on the island so it is expected that this year the unanimous condemnation is achieved.
