HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 12 (acn) Cuban president Raul Castro joined his Panamanian counterpart Juan Carlos Varela in a visit to the Latin American Medical School (ELAM by its Spanish acronym) this Friday afternoon.
The leaders were received by a group of students dressed in the typical outfit of the different peoples of Latin American and the Caribbean that are represented in this school, where future doctors are trained from all over the world.
Valera, who was in Cuba on a four-day official visit, thanked Cuba for having trained over 1,000 Panamanian youths as doctors and he also praised the Cuban health system.
The Cuban president explained him how the Cuban historical leader Fidel Castro came with idea of creating this school in 1999 to train Latin American doctors after hurricanes George and Mitch created havoc in Central America and the Caribbean.
Raul and Varela were accompanied on the tour around the school by its chancellor Rafael González Ponce de León and the Cuban Minister of Public Health Roberto Morales Ojeda.
Valera spoke briefly to the press after the visit, and said he was satisfied with his visit to Cuba, which he had to cut short to return to his country due to a disaster situation caused by heavy rains in the Central American country
