I admire Cuba's social system, says American girl

The jovial face barely allows discovering the fatigue of a long journey. Almost without pause for sleep, Ana Miledys Rosario, member of the 46th contingent of Venceremos Brigade, which comes from the United States to visit the island, agrees to talk to ACN.

"My ancestry is Dominican. I was born there, but at five I went to live to New York . The first time I heard about Cuba was through my father, an old communist who did not hide his admiration for you.

"However, in the US the negative propaganda of the revolutionary process is very strong. The conviction that my father was right brought me here for the first time, "said the young brigade member.

"Here I interacted with Cuban people, the hard work in agriculture made me to fall in love with the countryside, and housing construction in Santiago de Cuba to alleviate the damage of Hurricane Katrina left me convinced that there is a government concerned about its people ".

However, Ana says that she received the strongest impression last year when she had the opportunity to work during the sugarcane harvest along with Fernando Gonzalez, one of the Cuban heroes just released from US prisons, where he served time for fighting terrorism.

"That was an unforgettable moment, not every day you have the opportunity to share work with a personality like that, in that way, twinned with sweat and principles," added the interviewee.

When asked about what she most admires from Cuba, she did not hesitate to say that it is its social system.

"You are served free at any hospital without distinction; instead I work in a hospital as a social worker and it often hurts me that before any urgency or treatment, people are required to show their solvency or health insurance for treatment.

"People say in USA that Cuba lives in a dictatorship, and that there is a lot of violence in the streets. This is my third visit and in each of them the only thing I've found is the people's support to their revolution and civic tranquillity. I have retraced Havana at night without any danger.

"I would lie if I do not mention that the brigade has been under pressured by the US government, but they have never dared to take us to trial, because they know that the ban on travel to the Caribbean nation violates our constitutional rights and they do not want a legal debate.

"At the beginning of our dialogue you noticed I was tired and that's right. Coming to Cuba was an almost Herculean task; we traveled by bus hundreds of kilometers to Canada and then we boarded a plane here. A direct trip takes no more than three hours, but it is not allowed; things of blockade. "
