In the Santa Ifigenia cemetery, Tania Grajales, a descendant of the Grajales family, unveiled a bust by Alberto Lescay in the presence of Olga Lidia Tapia, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC).
Graciela Pacheco, promoter of the Center for Antonio Maceo Grajales Studies (CEAMG), told anecdotes talking about Mariana's love towards the homeland, of her when she was told about the death of her husband, Marcos Maceo, and her phrase: "Out, skirts get out of here, I can't stand tears!", in view of crying for the battler wounds of her son Antonio.
Present at the tribute were also members of the PCC Central Committee, Lazaro Exposito, first secretary in the province, and Teresa Amarelle, general secretary of the Federation of Cuban Women, government leaders, combatants of the Cuban Revolution and people of Santiago.
The Antonio Maceo Museum and the CEAMG joined the tribute to the courageous woman, with a day that included lectures, workshops and lectures in schools, grandparents clubs and other centers.
Mariana Grajales was born on July 12, 1815, and her mortal remains rest at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery since April 24, 1923, when they were transferred from Kingston, Jamaica, the place where the venerable old lady died.
