HAVANA, Cuba, May 4 (acn) Japan expressed its support of ongoing efforts by Cuba and the United States to normalize bilateral relations, a processed that kicked off with the historic December 17 announcement by presidents Raul Castro and Barack Obama.
"We wish that progress is made between the United States and Cuba," said Japanese Foreign Ministery´s spokesperson Ken Okaniwa in statements to PL news agency, who added that such progress will also contribute to strengthen economic links between Cuba and Japan.
During the first visit by a Japanese foreign minister to Cuba, which was made by Fumio Kishida this week, Okaniwa said that his country welcomes and supports the improvement of relations between Havana and Washington.
In this regards, the spokesperson recalled his country´s interest in furthering bilateral relation with Cuba and promoting economic links. He said that as part of bilateral relations, Japan will carry out research next fall to implement a donation of medical equipment to the island.
