HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 17 (acn) In order to establish a practical and effective mechanism for political consultations between foreign ministries, which would promote dialog, Cuba and Ireland signed in this city a Memorandum of Understanding.
Niall Burgess, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland, said the signing of this agreement with Rogelio Sierra Diaz, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, is a very important step to strengthen cooperation between the two nations.
He noted that during the talks they discussed how to increase investment by his country in Cuba, in sectors such as aviation, telecommunications, health and food security.
He added that cultural exchange is rising, visible in the number of groups of bagpipers who visit the island and their performances mainly in Havana.
Burgess commented that it is an honor to be in Cuba, "at a time when major changes are occurring in the region," he stated.
He announced that next year Ireland will celebrate the centenary of the actions that led to its independence and activities will be held as part of an exhibition on how his country helped the process of sovereignty in Latin America.
"We hope to bring the exhibition to Havana, and I invited the Minister to participate in the opening," he said.
In the presence of officials from the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Burgess thanked for the warm welcome and pleasant conversations between the two delegations.
On the Cuban side, Rogelio Sierra Diaz, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, signed the agreement reaffirming thus the expansion of bilateral relations based on the principles and provisions of the UN Charter.
