HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 7 (acn) The World Health Day, celebrated every April 7th, is dedicated this year to food safety and it is an opportunity for Cuba to show everything is doing in order to create good eating habits.
Dr. José Luis Di Fabio, representative in Havana of the Pan American and World Health Organizations (PAHO / WHO), said that safe food depends largely on the behavior that every human being has on the issue, and it is a shared responsibility.
In this regard he stressed the importance of farmers, producers and consumers to work together, because "the steps we take at home are not enough; also it is essential to sensitize the role that each can play for everyone to have confidence in our nutrition", he stated.
Unhealthy foods are linked to the deaths of two million people a year, mostly children, and those containing bacteria, parasites or chemicals cause more than 200 diseases, ranging from diarrhea to cancer.
Di Fabio warned that diseases caused by food are a global priority for their high incidence; however, most of them can be prevented if properly handled.
Therefore, they are focused this year on promoting measures to improve food quality along the chain, ranging from farm to the table, if we take in mind that investigations from that international body reveal that one of six people suffer from a disease transmitted by food.
Ana Lucia D'Emilio, representative in Cuba of the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), said they have developed projects to make available to the family nutritional guidelines dedicated to feeding children up to two years of life.
UNICEF also provides guidance on nutritional food handling in emergency situations and offers useful tips for nutritional feeding of pregnant women.
The main event for the date will take place today at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology in Havana.
