BAYAMO, Cuba, Oct 28 (ACN) With cloudy skies and intermittent light or heavier drizzle, social media users from several municipalities are reporting the progressive deterioration of weather conditions in the province of Granma.
Just hours before Hurricane Melissa's imminent impact on eastern Cuba, the population, led by its top political and government officials, is finalizing preventive measures, reiterating that the priority is to preserve life, based on unity and discipline.
From the Territorial Division of the Cuban Telecommunications Company, a line crew, specialized fiber optic personnel, and workers from the wireless network unit departed for the coastal area, where, together with the team from the municipality of Media Luna, they will be tasked with restoring telecommunications and reinforcing interconnections between localities in the face of possible damage from Melissa.
Advance teams from the Red Cross and the Fire Department are also deployed to support preventive and recovery efforts in Pilón.
As of Monday, the Corojo Dam in Guisa, part of the Bayamo River basin, is releasing 107.4 cubic meters per second as a hydrological prevention measure.
Authorities from the Provincial Defense Council (CDP), its local structures, and the Public Health sector are monitoring the conditions and status of those protected and the personnel working in the evacuation centers, while artistic brigades are contributing to recreation and general well-being.
On its Facebook profile, the Eastern Army reported that Army Corps General Roberto Legre Sotolongo, First Deputy Minister and Chief of the General Staff, detailed with the president of the CDP and the command of the Granma Military Region the measures taken and the actions to be taken immediately to increase the protection of the population and ensure an immediate response to the hurricane.
