SANTA CLARA, Cuba, Mar 20 (acn) Poor rainfall reported in the mountainous area of Villa Clara from September 2014 to date have caused an unprecedented drought in the area, resulting in affectation in agricultural work.
Ismabel Domínguez, specialist from the Provincial Meteorological Center, told ACN that the drought as a natural phenomenon is cumulative, it starts with the lack of rain, which results in depression of the water table, causing more dry land.
As the subsoil loses water, farmers will require larger volumes of the liquid to make their land productive, she explained.
The agro-meteorologist said the drought covers 91 percent of the total area of the territory, and 100 percent of Manicaragua municipality, where the mountains are.
Aliamén Crespo, peasant from Seibabo, told ACN that the grass is dry and to prevent malnutrition in herds they bring grass from remote areas.
According to Crespo, tobacco is one of the most affected productive activities by lack of rain and added that many crops are completely damaged by lack of adequate irrigation.
The tobacco planters have secured plantations, and this time, as in other times, the State National Insurance Company (ESEN by its Spanish acronym) paid, as a way to reverse the damage, she said.
Many locals say the lack of rainfall has no references in the hilly region and to prove it they add that even marabou and aroma, resistant to weather invasive plants, are dry.
