HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 9 (acn) José Ramón Machado Ventura, second secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, stressed the need for the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP by its Spanish acronym) to properly work at all levels, noting that if the agricultural sector is not developed, the country cannot do it either.
During the balance assembly of the organization in La Palma municipality, in Pinar del Río, Machado Ventura said that in midst of updating the Cuban economic model, more power to improve the productive structures have been granted, but this does not mean that the ANAP has ceased to be important.
The operation we are talking about is not to hold meetings and monitor attendance of members, but that farmers to feel themselves well represented, to be well informed and using this way when having an approach to the state or the government, said the official, quoted by Granma newspaper.
Machado Ventura also referred to the need to increase the integration of young people in agricultural production, key activity to the country, which is required today to allocate some two billion dollars annually for food imports.
In this regard, he said that this is an issue that stems from the poor conditions of the peasantry before the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, one of the reasons by which most families tried their sons to follow other paths.
However, he stated the current situation of the Cuban countryside is very different, thanks to all that has been achieved on issues such as electrification, education, health and other services, and also in infrastructure.
He added that for years the availability of resources in the sector was very limited, but this has begun to change. "We have already returned to make investments, equipment of all types are being acquired and although they are not sufficient, this indicates a greater economic support," he noted.
The assembly, second taking place in Pinar del Río in municipal instance, as part of the preparatory process in the province of ANAP´s eleventh congress, addressed a broad agenda that continued the discussion made for months in all grassroots organizations.
The operation of boards, the cadre policy, with emphasis on training the relay to ensure the work of the organization, and the search for solutions to the difficulties that hinder the achievement of better production results were analyzed in depth, based in peasant experience.
The delegates also were in favor of making increasingly effective the fight against corruption and crime. In this regard, examples of how the joint work of the peasant patrols and the National Revolutionary Police stopped the theft and slaughter of cattle, one of the worst consequences of criminal activities were informed.
The assembly, comprising 100 delegates representing different production structures, elected a new municipal committee, and María del Carmen Baez Caraballo was ratified as its head.
