HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 5 (acn) Theodore Friedrich, representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), reiterated in this capital the willingness of his organization to support the Cuban State in its efforts to achieve food sovereignty.
In statements to ACN, the official pointed out the willingness to expand the training of people linked to land and to encourage, along with the Agriculture Ministry, the use of agro-ecological techniques and of new technologies within the reach these producers.
Friedrich said that Cuba is a country with scarce resources due to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States for over five decades now; however, it has high human potential in the agricultural and livestock sector, which contributes to boost and strengthen economic activity in this field.
The FAO representative stressed that the organization aspires to reposition family agriculture in the center of agrarian, environmental and social policies in national agendas.
He added that 63 States reduced chronic undernourishment to half, a goal set for 2015 as one of the Millennium Development Goals.
Friedrich concluded that Cuba is one of the first nations to meet the objectives of the U.N. Organization to eradicate hunger and extreme poverty.
