Havana, Jan 4 (ACN) Cuba’s deputy Prime Minister Jorge Luis Perdomo marked the 62 years of the creation of the local Special Education Program.
On his X account, Perdomo recalled that some 31 thousand students are currently assisted in 339 special schools, hospitals and homes by teachers specialized in the field.
Special Education is a humanistic initiative which takes care of and protects the children, wrote deputy Prime Minister Ines Maria Chapman on X and she praised the role of special education workers.
Cuban Education Minister Naima Ariatne said that special education in Cuba covers all kids with special education needs, by implementing a basic curriculum and keeping close ties with the families and communities of the students.
At the time of the revolution’s triumph in 1959, Cuba counted on only 14 special education centers attending just 134 children suffering from auditive, visual, language conditions.
But in 1962, the Cuban Revolution set up the Special Education Department to train personnel and leaders, draw up curricula for the first 50 special schools to operate in the country.
